You start the game by picking one of five starting heroes, from a selection of one character from each show. Starter Deck Choices are: Bob (Bob's Burgers), Roger (American Dad!), Brian (Family Guy), Leela (Futurama) and Bobby (King of the Hill).[1][2] The game was released by Kongregate in 2016. Once you begin, you automatically start a tutorial, where you have to fight Peter Griffin. The game is played using a virtual deck of 25 cards from which you draw five into your virtual "hand". You must play either character cards or object cards. Once a character card is played on a correct object card, or vice versa, a combo will take place, combining the two cards into a more powerful one. That’s about it. There is an area for battle mode and adventure for level-based play. Both are assigned to you in quests. So far I have found the game to be pretty addictive. I did build out my deck too quickly and have spent the better part of the day paying in jewels to speed up my research. I have yet to spend any money in-game, but can see why you’d be tempted to, especially for faster research and rare cards. Building a collectible card game from five different animated series might not seem like the most obvious premise, but the use of the source material is actually pretty strong. And as a card game, Animation Throwdown has fairly solid fundamentals, too.
